Christian Pulisic has been criticized by Chelsea supporters after he snubbed traveling fans following the Blues’ 2-1 defeat by Southampton on Tuesday night.
The west Londoners took the lead on the south coast through Raheem Sterling but were pushed back just five minutes later when Romeo Lavia went unmarked from a corner on the edge of the box and rolled an attempt past Edouard Mendy at his near post.
In first-half injury time, Adam Armstrong fired the hosts ahead after a clever play and Chelsea struggled to come back in the second half, with Southampton coming closest to scoring another goal.
Thomas Tuchel brought an injury-plagued squad to St Mary’s for the game and the absence of a number of key people meant Hakim Ziyech was there from the start – although he has been in talks with Ajax on a transfer and is considered expendable by Chelsea.
Pulisic – who made no secret of his desire for more playing time – only came on the bench but was substituted on for the ineffective Kai Havertz after 66 minutes.
The American showed a few flashes down the right flank in his cameo but ultimately struggled to influence the game from what appeared to be a full-back position, with Chelsea doing little in the closing stages to test Saints goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu.
After the game, most of the Chelsea players thanked the fans who had traveled there for their support throughout the game. Some made apologetic gestures after their second away defeat following a 3-0 loss to Leeds at Elland Road.
But while all the players were heading to the away game, Pulisic was seen walking straight down the tunnel when the full-time whistle blew, ignoring Chelsea supporters.
That prompted some angry reactions from fans, with one saying, “Thanks us at least,” while another wrote, “Shameful. He hasn’t played well in two years.’
Many fans feel Chelsea should now concede to Pulisic’s pleas to leave the club, with one supporter digging in on both the US star and Ziyech: ‘Take her out of the club on loan tomorrow morning and take care of her next summer !“
However, other fans were more supportive of Pulisic and felt that Tuchel didn’t give him enough chances in his preferred position, even though other players were struggling.
“Pulisic is clearly not part of the plans,” wrote another fan. “He asked to go on loan, blocked fair enough, too much spending. Two appearances off the bench, with 10 men or no position, and people come for him expecting madness. Focus on the main characters of this story today!’
Pulisic had been linked with the likes of Manchester United and Newcastle but Chelsea prevented the 23-year-old from leaving the club either on loan or permanently and the former Dortmund man has now resigned to remain a squad player at Stamford Bridge .
