Jose Enrique believes Liverpool should sign Conor Gallagher from Chelsea to solve their midfield crisis.

Liverpool have had a difficult start to the new season, having drawn with Fulham and Crystal Palace before losing to arch-rivals Manchester United, although a record-breaking 9-0 win over Bournemouth softened the blow somewhat.

One reason for the Reds’ stuttering start is the number of injuries they have sustained, particularly in midfield where the likes of Thiago Alcantara, Naby Keita, Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain miss games.

As a result, Jurgen Klopp was forced to rely more heavily on declining James Milner and talented but very inexperienced Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho.

Many have suggested the club must therefore re-enter the transfer market for a new central midfielder, although Klopp has remained timid about whether or not there will be any more signings.

Dortmund star Jude Bellingham has been heavily touted for a big-money move to Anfield next summer, but a more immediate solution may need to be found if the club are to seriously challenge for the Premier League title this season.

Former Liverpool defender Enrique agrees, telling BoyleSports Premier League: “Liverpool definitely need a midfielder. Oxlade-Chamberlain, Thiago and Naby Keita are great but they are always injured and you need strength at depth.

“They’re really missing a midfielder at the moment and losing Sadio Mane was a massive loss. ‘I am in love [Matheus] Nunes who just signed for Wolves and it’s a mistake Liverpool didn’t go for him.

‘You talk about it [Moises] Caicedo from Brighton but I like Gallagher from Chelsea. He could come back to Crystal Palace but I like him a lot, he will be a good player.

“Next year Liverpool will go for someone like Bellingham but there aren’t many options at the moment. I personally love Gallagher from Chelsea.

“If they don’t get the players they need it will be difficult to see them fight for the title. If they are lucky with injuries they could be there but if not I think it will be difficult.

After a stellar season on loan at Palace, Gallagher has returned to Chelsea to play an active role in the first-team but he struggled in the opening games of the season.

He was particularly weak in the 3-0 defeat at Leeds and was sent off against Leicester last Saturday, leading some to speculate he needs more time to develop now that a Palace return is said to be on the cards is.
