Paul Merson has urged Chelsea to sign Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha on transfer deadline day but says Blues owner Todd Boehly should forget about Everton’s Anthony Gordon signing.
Chelsea took their summer spending to over £200m this week as they completed a £70m move for Leicester City defender Wesley Fofana.
France defender Fofana, England striker Raheem Sterling, Senegalese centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly, England midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka and American goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina have all opted to join Stamford Bridge this summer.
But Chelsea may not be done in the transfer market as they continue to be linked with late moves for Palace star Zaha and Everton ace Gordon.
The summer transfer window closes on Thursday and Arsenal legend Merson believes Chelsea should try to secure a stunning deal for Zaha but abandon their interest in Gordon, whom Everton value at more than £60m.
“Wilfried Zaha has been linked with a move to Chelsea and it remains to be seen if he will secure a transfer before the deadline,” Merson told Sportskeeda.
“I think a lot of people have judged him based on his stint at Manchester United and I think that’s a bit unfair. Players like Kevin De Bruyne and Mohamed Salah didn’t quite make it at Chelsea, but check them out now!
“Zaha has added goals to his game and I think he will be a really good signing for Chelsea.”
Merson added, “I don’t understand these Anthony Gordon links. The boy is a good player, but the transfer fee mentioned is enormous!
“If I were in charge of Everton and offered to take Armando Broja or Conor Gallagher as part of a player-plus-cash deal for Gordon, I would consider it the deal of the century and take it!”
Chelsea’s shaky start to the new season continued on Tuesday night as they suffered a 2-1 defeat in Southampton. Thomas Tuchel’s side face West Ham this weekend.
