Arsenal are reportedly preparing a £25m bid for Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz.
Injuries to Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny have put Arsenal’s transfer plans late in the window and Mikel Arteta is keen to add a new midfielder to his squad.
Arsenal will need to act quickly to beat the Premier League’s 11pm transfer deadline and a £25million offer will be made to Luiz, according to The Sun.
The report claims Villa will try to resist the 24-year-old’s sale but may be forced to accept a deal as he has entered the final year of his contract.
Chelsea, who are also looking to sign a new midfielder before the window is up, are also reportedly considering a move for Luiz.
Asked about Luiz’s future after Villa’s 2-1 defeat by Arsenal on Wednesday night, Steven Gerrard said: “There are more than two people in control of it but I’m certainly not one of them. That’s going to be Douglas, that’s going to be his agent, and that’s going to happen around it.
“I’d love to keep him – he’s a fantastic player and I made that clear. We are in no position to lose top players.
“But at the same time Douglas has a year left and it’s one of those really tricky situations where the club has to do what’s best for the club, not necessarily what’s best for me.”
Villa have already taken a step to strengthen their midfielder in the event of Luiz’s departure as his €15m (£12.9m) offer for Leander Dendoncker was accepted by Wolves.
