According to reports from the Netherlands, Chelsea have failed in a late attempt to sign PSV midfielder Ibrahim Sangare.

Thomas Tuchel is keen to strengthen his squad before the 11pm transfer deadline on Thursday and a new midfielder is on Chelsea’s shortlist.

Chelsea have held talks about a move for Frenkie de Jong this summer but the Netherlands international wants to stay at FC Barcelona.

According to Eindhoven’s Dagblad, Chelsea have contacted PSV this week about Sangare’s availability, saying they are willing to pay up to €45m (£38.9m) for the midfielder.

However, PSV have turned down Chelsea’s offers and the 24-year-old will now stay at the Dutch club as they are unable to sign a replacement as the Eredivisie transfer window is closed.

Had Chelsea acted earlier this summer they could have signed Sangare for €37million (£31.9million) thanks to a release clause in his contract.

But the Côte d’Ivoire international signed a new contract with PSV in August that annulled his previous release clause and runs until 2027.

Chelsea have also been linked with a deadline-day move for Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz.

“I would like to keep him. I think he’s a fantastic player. I made that clear,” said Villa manager Steven Gerrard on Wednesday evening.

“We’re not in a position where we have to lose our top players but at the same time Douglas has a year left.”

Elsewhere, Chelsea are hoping to secure a deal with Barcelona for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang before Thursday’s deadline.

The move would mean Marcos Alonso join Barca and the Spanish defender was spotted in Madrid ahead of his transfer on Wednesday.
