Chelsea have reportedly agreed a late deal to sign Juventus defensive midfielder Denis Zakaria on loan.

According to The Athletic, Zakaria is currently undergoing his medical in Turin having already agreed personal terms, while the Blues also have the option of signing the Switzerland international on a permanent basis.

The deal has progressed very quickly as Chelsea reportedly only opened talks with Juventus on Thursday after giving up pursuit of PSV star Ibrahim Sangare for good.

Thomas Tuchel has been desperate to bolster his midfield options after a difficult start to the season in which his side won just two of their first five games while suffering embarrassing defeats at Leeds and Southampton.

Central midfield was a problem area, with N’Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic suffering from injuries while Jorginho and Conor Gallagher struggled with form.

Another option in Ruben Loftus-Cheek has been converted into a right-back, while Billy Gilmour is expected to leave Stamford Bridge and Brighton have agreed to buy the young Scot for £9million.

Zakaria made his name at Borussia Mönchengladbach and only joined Juventus in January, his contract with the Bundesliga side nearing the end but his playing time in Italy has been very limited so far.

The 25-year-old is one of many deals Chelsea aim to secure before the 11pm transfer deadline on Thursday. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is close to a move from Barcelona while Edson Alvarez is also wanted but doesn’t want to sell Ajax.

Todd Boehly has already spent over £240million in his first summer as Chelsea owner, with the likes of Wesley Fofana, Marc Cucurella, Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly arriving in west London.
