Erik ten Hag says Casemiro has yet to “adjust” to the Manchester United squad after being left on the bench for Sunday’s Premier League clash with Arsenal.
Casemiro is yet to start for his new side following his £70million arrival from Real Madrid in August.
The Brazil international appeared off the bench against Southampton and Leicester City but was expected to start for the visit of Mikel Arteta’s side, who top the Premier League with their first five games of the season.
Scott McTominay retains his place in the squad alongside Bruno Fernandes and Christian Eriksen, but ten Hag admits the Scot’s recent performances also contributed to his decision to keep the five-time Champions League winner as a substitute.
“He’s new to the team, he has to adapt to the team. He has to get used to the way I play football,” said ten Hag before kick-off.
“The other thing, Scott McTominay is playing really well.”
However, Casemiro’s Brazil international Antony comes straight into the squad.
The winger eventually sealed his move to Old Trafford on transfer deadline day for a fee of £86million and although he’s also missed Ajax’s last two games due to being forced through a move, ten Hag saw fit to take him against to start the Gunners.
“He knows the style we want to play and what we expect and demand.
“He can be an offensive threat with his speed in one-on-ones,” ten Hag said of the decision to start Antony.
Elsewhere in the squad, Marcus Rashford is again leading the line, with Cristiano Ronaldo still among the substitutes.
Captain Harry Maguire is also on the bench while Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez continue their partnership at the heart of defence.
Martin Dubravka is also among the substitutions after being loaned out by Newcastle United.
