Roy Keane has praised Marcus Rashford after his “absolutely brilliant” performance in defeating Arsenal.

Rashford scored twice after giving Antony the assist for a debut goal as United sealed a 3-1 win over the Gunners and moved up to three points top of the Premier League with their fourth straight win.

The 24-year-old endured a disappointing 2021/22 season which saw him lose his place in the England squad but had a bright start in life under Erik ten Hag where he would have a growing influence in the future.

Keane, one of Rashford’s most vocal critics last season, praised his performance after the game and insisted the forward will ‘always cause problems’, having rediscovered a much-needed ‘hunger’ in his game.

When asked what the difference was in Rashford’s performance on Sunday, Keane told Sky Sports: “Hunger, desire, the skills, the decision making, the stretching of the teams.

“He’s had a full pre-season with the club, different [from] last summer. Now he looks reassured, he’s happy in his attitude and with Marcus around he’s a handful.

“You don’t want to play him because he’s causing problems. When he stretches teams, he’s a good player.

‘Today he was outstanding, it was an absolutely brilliant performance. And I’ve been hard on him for the past year or two. He needs to be more consistent but fantastic today.”

United’s new £82m signing Antony scored 35 minutes after his club debut and swept home Rashford’s through ball against the flow of play.

Arsenal equalized on the hour through Bukayo Saka, but Rashford restored United’s lead 60 minutes later, racing on Bruno Fernandes’ superb through ball to score.

Mikel Arteta responded by making a series of attacking changes, with Eddie Nketiah, Fabio Vieira and Emile Smith Rowe all being used with 15 minutes remaining in the competition.

But United struck again on the counterattack and Fernandes freed Christian Erksen, who set up Rashford for a tap-in.

Sunday’s win is United’s fourth after losing the first two games of the season to Brighton and Brentford.
