Rio Ferdinand “hopes” Phil Jones gets a chance to leave Manchester United and rekindle his career elsewhere after he was reportedly kicked out of the first-team dressing room at Carrington.

Jones, 30, has played in more than 200 games during his 11-year tenure at Old Trafford but has slipped down the pecking order in recent seasons.

He has only played two games in the starting XI in the last two years and has been unavailable since pre-season due to injury.

It was reported over the weekend that Jones had been asked to leave the dressing room at United’s training ground to make room for the Erik ten Hag signings.

On Monday, the former England defender was left out of Manchester United’s Europa League squad as his struggles continue.

Sharing a dressing room with Jones, Ferdinand feels sorry for his former teammate who is behind Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Axel Tuanzebe and Teden Mengi in Ten Hag’s plans.

“Listen, I have to be honest, I hope it’s not true,” Ferdinand said on Vibe with Five when asked about Jones’ situation at Manchester United.

“If it’s true, then it’s Erik ten Hag who interprets it and says: ‘You are not part of my plans, if you go ahead you are superfluous.’

“But that’s the minstrel. If you are not involved and are not part of the first team going forward, why take someone else’s place?

“Maybe there is a young player that he wants to bring in and gain experience in the dressing room.

“We’ll have to wait and see but Phil Jones, if he’s still around but has been demoted to reserve, is a tough pill to swallow.

“He’s had some really horrific injuries so I just hope he stays fit and can eventually go out and play somewhere.”

Ten Hag named his six summer signings in United’s Europa League squad but left out Brandon Williams and Jones.

Manchester United start their Europa League campaign on Thursday night when Spanish club Real Sociedad travel to Old Trafford.
