Peter Schmeichel insists it won’t be “an easy ride” for Antony at Manchester United despite the former Ajax winger getting his career off to a perfect start at Old Trafford.

Antony, who made a big move from the Netherlands last week, scored in the 35th minute of his United debut in Sunday’s 3-1 win over Premier League leaders Arsenal.

The 22-year-old found space in Arsenal’s penalty area and swept home Marcus Rashford’s pass before celebrating boisterously in front of the stadium’s away corner.

Arsenal tried to fight back after Antony’s opener in the first half and equalized after an hour through Bukayo Saka.

But Manchester United were not to be denied a fourth straight win, with Rashford scoring twice to end Arsenal’s perfect start to the season.

Old Trafford legend Schmeichel was impressed by Antony’s United debut but urged fans “not to put too much pressure on him” as he expects he will run into trouble if he tries to adapt to his adapt to new environment.

“We’ve spent a lot of money on him and you have to have a little faith in the manager and think he knows what he’s bringing in,” Schmeichel said on BBC Radio 5 Live.

“We all know that coming into the Premier League from other leagues and having to play for Manchester United on top of that is a very big difference.

“When things go well they get praise and hopefully Antony can do well in every game. He played well and is making all the headlines today.

“But we don’t want to put too much pressure on him and we need to adjust and acclimate this young man to the Premier League because it’s not going to be an easy ride for him. It’s not an easy road for anyone coming into this league, especially playing for United.

“We’ve seen it many times. Let’s be happy that he played really well and laugh at where he celebrated his goal [in front of the Arsenal fans].’

Manchester United had a worrying start to the season – a home defeat by Brighton and an embarrassing 4-0 loss at Brentford.

But Erik ten Hag’s side began their revival at the hands of formidable arch-rivals Liverpool and have since beaten Southampton, Leicester City and Arsenal to climb to fifth place in the Premier League.

Goalkeeper legend Schmeichel adds: “It definitely looks different than after the first two games. There is no doubt that the level is rising and they are playing much better.

“I think what I like the most is the mentality, you see how you run and you put pressure on the ball, things that we haven’t seen from the team in a while.

“It looks like Ten Hag is getting his message across to the players and they are reacting.”

Manchester United start their Europa League season against Real Sociedad on Thursday night before returning to home action with a trip to Crystal Palace at the weekend.
