Sergio Aguero names Tottenham as the secret favorites to win the Champions League and has named three other contenders for the European Club Cup title.

The 2022-23 Champions League kicks off on Tuesday night, with holders Real Madrid and 2021 winners Chelsea.

Last season’s runners-up Liverpool, who won the Champions League in 2020, will start their campaign against Napoli on Wednesday.

Tottenham, who reached the final two years ago, will mark a return to the Champions League against Marseille and also aim to qualify in Group D for the knockout rounds with Sporting Lisbon and Eintracht Frankfurt.

“Tottenham already had a great performance in the Champions League with Mauricio Pochettino,” former Manchester City and Barcelona striker Agüero told Stake.

“With Antonio Conte, a coach with a lot of experience, they now manage to be a very solid team. He knows how he wants to play and his counterattack can be deadly.

“He has complemented Kane and Son with Richarlison and two wingers who are very good assistants like Kulusevski and Perisic.

“Tottenham will be a very difficult rival for any team. They could be a big threat in Europe this year.”

Despite being dominant in England, Manchester City are still looking for their first Champions League triumph and Aguero believes the summer signing of Erling Haaland could prove crucial to his former club’s European ambitions.

Haaland has made a sensational start to his Man City career, scoring ten goals in six Premier League games, including two hat-tricks in a row.

“He’s been consistent for every team he’s played for,” Aguero said. “He has a very important goals-per-game average and is now proving that at City too.

“He makes me very happy that he converts because he offers what the team needs, which is goals.

“And when that happens, City have more chances to go as far as they can. He could help them finally break their Champions League hoodoo.

Aguero also sees French champions Paris Saint-Germain and Spanish giants Barcelona as Champions League contenders.

Like Manchester City, PSG have failed in the Champions League in recent years but appear to be on the right track under new coach Christophe Galtier.

“The Leo team [Messi] is always a candidate,” added Aguero. “He looks like he’s back at his best and Leo has that winning mentality that he needs on any team that wants to achieve anything.

“We know his competitive spirit. And even more so when he’s with great players like Mbappe and Neymar. And PSG have already gained a lot of experience in Europe.”

Barcelona, meanwhile, continue their rebuilding under Xavi and qualified for the Champions League after finishing second in La Liga last season.

“Barcelona are a great side in Europe,” said Aguero. “She has the weight of her story and has now also managed to regroup with a great squad and technical director.

“It allows you to compete with everyone on an equal footing. Barca will advance to the next round. It won’t be easy, but they will make it.

“From what we’ve seen so far, Xavi has managed to put the group together very well and is playing attacking football as he now has a lot of options in attack which is getting him results.”
