Rio Ferdinand has urged Edouard Mendy to “fix the mistakes” and rediscover his Champions League-winning form after another shaky performance for Chelsea.

Mendy should have done better preventing West Ham’s opener at Stamford Bridge on Saturday and was then lucky to be saved by VAR after the Hammers thought they had leveled late.

The Senegalese goalscorer was instrumental in Chelsea’s Champions League triumph in 2021 but has not been at his best so far this season as the Blues have conceded nine goals in their first six games.

Speaking on Vibe with Five, Ferdinand said: “I think the biggest thing for Chelsea from this game is that Edouard Mendy is way too involved in situations like this.

‘Against Leeds he was to blame for the first goal. Also this one. There were other instances where he made mistakes and wasn’t punished.

“They need to iron that out quickly because he was brilliant last season, he was phenomenal.

“He has to eradicate these mistakes from his game. As a goalkeeper, you don’t want to make the headlines. The less you talk about them, the better off they are. He’s also in the news at the moment.’

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel addressed Mendy’s form after the 2-1 win over West Ham, insisting “things are going against his number 1”.

“I think at the moment he’s a bit unlucky in what he’s doing,” said Tuchel.

“He’s fantastic in training and he’s generally a very calm and self-reflective guy who knows he’s missing a bit of luck at the moment.

‘Things are not going in his favor. If he has a situation where his actions are not 100% clear, he will be severely punished for it.

“He’s just in this moment and it feels like it’s not his fault so much. I feel like because he’s trying everything, he’s very calm and focused. We will continue to support him.”

Chelsea’s comeback win over West Ham, inspired by goals from Ben Chilwell and Kai Havertz, propelled the Blues to sixth place in the Premier League.
