Jack Wilshere has compared Christian Eriksen to Manchester United hero Michael Carrick and backed the Denmark midfielder for being a “big player” for the Premier League club this season.
United signed former Ajax, Tottenham, Inter Milan and Brentford star Eriksen on a free transfer in the summer.
The 30-year-old put on his best United performance yet on Sunday to help Erik ten Hag’s side win their fourth straight game and end Arsenal’s 100 per cent start to the Premier League season.
“Not many players have the vision he has,” former Arsenal and England midfielder Wilshere told Premier League Productions.
“In the first few games he was questioned because he played a little deeper. But he gives you creativity.
‘The passport [in the build-up to United’s opening goal against Arsenal], it’s almost like a pass from Michael Carrick. He plays with his head up, scans the field, he sees the picture before the ball comes to him.
“A lot of people appreciate the pass before submission and he’ll do that a lot for United this season. It’s so difficult to defend and it also gives the defense another problem.
“If Christian Eriksen can keep himself fit and healthy then he will be a great player for Manchester United.”
Some pundits have expressed surprise at United’s summer deal for Eriksen and Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand was among those skeptical of the transfer.
But Ferdinand now admits he was wrong to question Ten Hag’s signing, telling his YouTube channel: “Can I give a special, special shout out to my man of the match, Christian Eriksen?
“I have to put my hand up because I was one of those people who was skeptical about the signing. It’s another signing from Erik ten Hag that I’m sure was his decision to take on.
“Right now, you cannot dispute that decision. In today’s game, his pass, the first when he wrapped his eyes around it, killed about five Arsenal team players.
“The other where he plays it Bruno and uses it for Rashford and of course the assist. His forward pass is among the best in the league right now.
“I was a bit skeptical when I asked what he will bring, will he start? Well, he’s starting and yes, he’s producing, so Christian Eriksen, I salute you.’
Former Arsenal and England winger Paul Merson was also full of praise for Eriksen after the Old Trafford clash, saying he is the difference between the two teams.
Merson said: “The first 15 minutes of the second half they have [United] was torn to shreds. Arsenal should have gone on and won. It was so one-sided, the football game.
‘He was the difference, Eriksen. I thought he was run over [Martin] Odegaard sometimes I thought Odegaard would get him, turn him around and fix him, he would run the show.
“But the thing about Eriksen that Arsenal don’t have is that ball through the lines. He did it with Fernandes for the first goal in the first half and it did it again for Fernandes [for United’s second goal].
‘Arsenal doesn’t have that. They have [Bukayo] sake and [Sambi] Lokonga, they won’t get the ball through the lines, that was the difference between the two sides for me, that was it, it was his [Eriksen’s] Pass.
“It’s the same old story, you walk away from here and we say, ‘We did well’ but didn’t get anything from the game.”
