Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez (42) attended a press conference on the eve of the Champions League match against Victoria. The Spaniard took the opportunity to discuss the Miralem Pjanic case.
The 32-year-old midfielder, who returned to Catalonia this summer after a six-month loan to Besiktas, will join UAE club, Sharjah FC, having been in contact with a French squad, among others. A decision made by Miralem Pjanic himself, not the club, according to Xavi: “He chose to leave the club to try and get more minutes or chances. Everyone is in control of their future, they were professionals until the end and I thank them for that. I love the player, but he made the decision to leave. He got an offer that gave him more playing time, and I totally understand.” Having more minutes makes him happier.
Barcelona is, a priori, satisfied with this departure, as it will allow the Spanish club to extend the contract of Gavi (18), a Spanish midfielder who trained at La Masia and is linked with Barcelona until 2023.
Failed transfer to FC Barcelona
He moved to the Catalan club in 2020, for a modest sum of 60 million euros, in exchange for the Brazilian Arthur, who left for Juventus for 76 million euros, and Miralem Pjanic never won in Barcelona. The former Lyon played 30 matches, in all competitions, during his first season with the club (2020-2021), and has not worn the Blaugrana shirt since. In Besiktas, the Bosnian did not leave much memory, despite the long playing time (20 matches in the Turkish league, 2 assists).
Under a contract with FC Barcelona until 2024, Miralem Pjanic will soon join the United Arab Emirates, via an unliquidated transfer.
