Neymar has named the toughest defender he’s ever faced and given his verdict on Virgil van Dijk, Raphael Varane and Antonio Rudiger.
The Paris Saint-Germain Brazilian superstar is well-placed to talk about some of the best defenders in world football as he has blossomed into a modern-day great in recent years.
Neymar has scored 110 goals in 153 games for PSG and also reached triple figures during his time at Barcelona. Only one player – Pelé – has scored more goals for Brazil than Neymar.
The forward rates Manchester City and England star Kyle Walker as his all-time toughest opponent and has also opted against Liverpool centre-back Van Dijk, Manchester United defender Varane and ex-Chelsea man Rudiger.
When asked about the toughest opponent he has ever played against, Neymar told DAZN: “[Kyle] walker. Because he is fast, strong and intelligent.”
Speaking of Van Dijk, who is widely regarded as the best defender in the Premier League, Neymar said: “Playing against Van Dijk is tough because he’s so strong and intelligent as a centre-back.
“He knows when it’s the right time to shut you down and when to attack. That makes it more difficult.”
Neymar turned his attention to former Real Madrid defender Varane, who joined Old Trafford in the summer of 2021, adding: “I’ve played Varane many times.
“He’s a very good central defender. He is fast and intelligent. Its positioning is very good. He’s a top player.
“He almost never does anything wrong. That’s why he won so much.’
Neymar also admitted that Rudiger – who left Chelsea to join Real Madrid in the summer – is the type of player who ” scares you”.
“Antonio is a central defender who instills fear. He is very strong and big. Some strikers are a bit scared,” said Neymar.
