Donny van de Beek has explained why Erik ten Hag will be ‘really good’ for Manchester United and offered his verdict on the club’s summer transfer business.

In Ten Hag’s first transfer window, United signed Brazilian winger Antony, Argentine defender Lisandro Martinez, Dutch left-back Tyrell Malacia, Danish playmaker Christian Eriksen and Brazilian midfielder Casemiro.

Manchester United finished just sixth in the Premier League last season but have made a promising start to the 2022-23 season, winning their last four games to climb to fifth place.

Van de Beek worked under Ten Hag at Ajax and believes the Dutchman is the perfect man to push United forward and get the club back in contention for titles.

“He will be really good for the club,” Van de Beek told MUTV. “I think in terms of the way the club is and how they want to play, it’s a good mix for what they want as a manager.

‘I am looking forward to. We had great successes at Ajax back then – the semi-finals of the Champions League and we won trophies.

“So it was a special time. Now we are here, with a new chapter and a new challenge, and of course we want to do the same here.”

Manchester United lost their first two games of the season but responded with victories over Liverpool, Southampton, Leicester City and Arsenal.

When asked about the progress of the team under Ten Hag, Van de Beek said: “I still think we can do a lot better and improve, but we’ve signed a couple of new players – high quality players – so they’ll join the team of course help to improve.

“We train very hard every day and invest a lot of time. I believe that every week we will do better and better and that is what we are pushing for.”

Van de Beek spoke about the newcomers at Old Trafford, adding: “I already know them as a player.

“Some of the players I played against – I played against Christian, also against Casemiro, with Ajax. Liha [Lisandro]i played with him.

“So I know what they are capable of and they are really good players so for sure they will help us.

“These are nice people, but also team players. I think it’s important to work hard together. As people they fit in very well with the players we have.’
