Mikel Arteta is considering joining Arsenal on loan with Marquinhos in January.

The Gunners signed Marquinhos from Sao Paulo in June, with the 19-year-old on a long-term contract with the Emirates.

Marquinhos has not played for early leaders Arsenal in the Premier League but made his debut for the club in Thursday’s Europa League win against FC Zurich.

The Brazilian gave Arteta’s side an early lead when he converted Eddie Nketiah’s cutback to score his first goal in an Arsenal shirt.

Gunners legend Martin Keown was full of praise for Marquinhos after the 2-1 draw, comparing him to Bayern Munich star Serge Gnabry, who played at Arsenal earlier in his career.

But Arteta is concerned Marquinhos won’t get enough playing time to develop his game in the first half of the 2022/23 season and is therefore considering a loan deal for the teenage star in January.

According to The Sun, Arsenal were planning to loan Marquinhos out as soon as he joined the club but changed their minds as they were impressed with his performance in training.

The Gunners view Marquinhos as a future Arsenal star but will loan him out in the winter window if they believe it will benefit all parties.

Speaking of Marquinhos after Arsenal’s Europa League win in Zurich, former Gunners defender Keown told BT Sport: “It’s the confidence, we talked about having that class of possession. I saw a lot of it in Marquinhos tonight.

“Look at that pass from Fabio Vieira, great ball into the channel, we talked about Nketiah and his movement and then a great pass from his weaker foot.

“And then the end! The ball lifts just before it goes inside and it’s a wonderful finish from him.

“Hopefully the first of many. He has a great future ahead of him.

“This is a real chance in front of him now. Bukayo Saka is only a few years older himself, but that’s the quality he’ll get chances at.

“He looked a bit like a Gnabry-type player. He is small, stocky, explosive pace. He looked very classy.

“He picked and picked his moments wisely, whipped in a few crosses. Really good quality. He continued to produce.

“I think this is great news. We’ve seen Saka, we’ve seen Smith Rowe start her career in this very competition. I think we see another star in the making here.”

Fellow expert Kevin Campbell agreed, adding: “For a 19-year-old, what an excellent result. Shows his emotions too, his first goal for Arsenal and what an absolutely amazing goal.”
