Todd Boehly has falsely claimed that Chelsea academy produced both Kevin De Bruyne and Mohamed Salah while he intends to buy a top European club to develop players.

The Blues have one of the best academies in the Premier League after years of investment under former owner Roman Abramovich. Their current roster includes a number of alumni such as Mason Mount and Reece James.

Boehly is keen to build on that and believes a feeder club in another league would create an ideal path – particularly for young, non-European players they wish to sign.

But he made a pretty big blip when he falsely claimed De Bruyne and Salah had come through Chelsea academy, despite the duo arriving from Genk and Basel for sizeable fees aged 21 and 22 respectively.

The American told the SALT forums on Tuesday: “The challenge that Chelsea have at the moment – or one of them – is that you can loan 18-, 19-, 20-year-old superstars to other clubs and they put their development in their hands of another.

“I think our goal is to make sure we can show our young superstars ways to get onto the Chelsea pitch while also giving them real playing time.

“And for me that goes through another club somewhere in a really competitive league in Europe.

“And because of Brexit you also have to think, ‘Well, how do I get these guys over to England because of Brexit?’

“So we need GBEs [Governing Body Endorsements]these are basically points you get for playing in different leagues.

“The more points you get, the more caps you play, the more national teams you have, the easier it is to immigrate. So our job is to figure out how to put this platform together so we can get our 18, 19, 20 year olds.

“Because we have one of the best academies in the world. So if you look at what our academy has developed, our academy has developed Mo Salah, Kevin De Bruyne, more recently Tammy Abraham, Reece James, Mason Mount, Trevoh Chalobah.

“We currently have 10 or 11 players who are on loan and controlled by us or we have the right to buy them back or they play for our team that comes from our academy.

“So what we really need is a place where we can develop our 18, 19, 20 year olds somewhere in Portugal or Belgium or somewhere like that and get them the points that they need.

“And taking them out of South America and into Portugal for example is a perfect place we think and then putting them on the pitch for Chelsea.”
