AC Milan technical director Paolo Maldini has revealed that Chelsea have been trying to sign Rafael Leao in the summer transfer window.

The 23-year-old played a key role in AC Milan’s Serie A title last season, scoring 11 goals and providing eight assists.

Leao has carried his excellent form into the new season where he has three goals and five assists so far.

The Portugal international drew interest in the summer transfer window but AC Milan insisted he could only leave if his €150million (£129.7million) buyout clause was met.

Maldini has confirmed that Chelsea inquired about Leao’s availability in the summer but their request was denied.

“We’ve already started talking to him. But not now, not for a long time. Any renewal can be simple or complicated, the player’s will makes the difference because that of the club is there,” Maldini told Sky Italy on Wednesday night.

“Renewal is a topic that we addressed many months ago.

“Rafa knows the solution is to stay with us to be stronger than now. We are a young and growing team.

“He still has a lot to learn, but we intend to do great things and grow with him.

“Chelsea’s officially written offer has not arrived, but it has on an informal level. Of course it was rejected.’
