Andy Murray showed no signs of his recent convulsive problems as he passed 24th seed Francesco Cirondolo to reach the second round of the US Open on Monday.

The 35-year-old came into the tournament after winning only one game on the North American hardcourt this season and with fears of constant cramping, but this proved to be a relatively straightforward walk in wet conditions.

Argentine Cerondolo won most of his points in the standings on clay and Murray had to work his way through plenty of long rallies en route to a 7-5 6-3 6-3 victory, with the only real negative failing to serve. All three groups.
