Luke Donald will now receive six captain selections when building his 12-man squad after the Ryder Cup Europe announced changes to the 2023 qualification process.

This is an increase from the three choices Padraig Harrington was allowed to do when Europe was defeated 19-9 by the United States last year.

In the meantime, the new process will see three players automatically qualify from the European points list along with the top three players from the global points list.

Team Europe qualification for the 2022 BMW PGA Championship begins September 8-11 and will come to a close on September 3, 2023 before the Ryder Cup kicks off in Italy on September 25.

Among the changes, the ratio between the highest and lowest ranked events in the DP World Tour when it comes to allocating points has been lowered from a factor of 6:1 (12,000 points vs. 2000 points) to a factor of 4:1 (6000 points vs. 1500 points).

The press release did not say whether LIV Golf players would be barred from the selection, with up to 18 players expected to appear at Wentworth next week including the likes of Ian Poulter, Sergio Garcia and Lee Westwood. however. It remains to be seen if Donald’s increase in shots offers LIV players a path of choice.

“These changes to Team Europe’s qualification process follow an in-depth analysis with the team in the European Cup Ryder and with (vice-captains) Thomas (Bjorn) and Eduardo (Molinari),” Donald said. “I am pleased that when we presented our ideas to the Championship Committee, they were 100 per cent supportive of it.

“The revised overall process removes the need for points multipliers in the last few months of the qualifying period, and the six selections give me flexibility to ensure we have the strongest squad in Marco Simone in terms of in-form players, players with Ryder Cup experience, and potential pairs.

“In terms of the European points list, the adjustment of points allocation will give a better chance for DP World Tour members who play mostly in the DP World Tour to make the Ryder Cup team through one of the three locations now available from that list.

“We’ve also moved the end of the qualifying period forward to give the players the right amount of preparation time once the squad is formed.”

However, the factor that remains unchanged is that there are no points available from any scheduled tournament for the Rolex Series event on the DP World Tour.

Jay Kennings, European Ryder Cup Director, added: “We are delighted with the details of the European Ryder Cup 2023 team qualification process that was announced today. Luke has already proven to be a strong and determined captain with firm ideas on how to get the best out of Team Europe.

“He has demonstrated that during this period of consultation and analysis, and I think the fact that the tournament committee was behind his thoughts and ideas shows how much they respect him.

“Every member of Team Europe’s back team is excited about today’s announcement and very much looks forward to not only the start of the qualifying campaign at the BMW PGA Championship, but also the full 12-month campaign leading up to Rome next September.”
