Referee Ferrieri Caputi to Be First Woman to Ref a Serie A Game

Referee Maria Sol Ferrere Capote will be the first woman to officiate a Serie A match. The 32-year-old was scheduled to officiate next Sunday’s Sassuolo-Salernitana match at Mapei Stadium in Reggio Emilia.

Her first-class debut has been rumored to be in the pipeline for a long time. It was due to take place before the World Cup break, but has now been anticipated a few weeks ago since Ferreri Capote was called up to referee the U-17 Women’s World Cup in India.

The president of the Italian Referees Association (AIA) Alfredo Trentalang – a former Serie A referee – has commented on the historic decision, as quoted by him. Gazzetta dello sport:

This is no ordinary day and I’m excited. Maria Sol will make her debut in the First Division because of merit, without shortcuts, because of her skills, and because of a project we launched as AIA (…) We are about to live a historic moment after more than 110 years. We thank those who believed in it – and thus FIFA – and those who did so before them, such as Rosetti and UEFA. We don’t give any privileges, Maria Sol got this way, and that’s a success for all of our movement. “

Born in Livorno, Ferreri Capote has already played in 32 League C matches, 3 League Two matches and officiated the Sampdoria-Regina Italian Cup match on August 5.
