Arsenal 1-0 PSV Eindhoven

Arsenal stormed into the Europa League knockout stages thanks to Granit Xhaka’s goal as they finally broke PSV Eindhoven’s resistance.

The Switzerland midfielder turned and fired home with 20 minutes remaining to win a tie postponed to September 15 following the death of Queen Elizabeth II and ensure Mikel Arteta’s side met two games from time qualified from Group A.

The Gunners boss made six changes since Sunday’s 1-0 win in Leeds against the Dutch side – managed by Ruud van Nistelrooy, who has had some notorious struggles with Arsenal while playing at Manchester United.

The hosts knew a draw would get them through but found visiting goalkeeper Walter Benitez in fine form.

Top scorer Gabriel Jesus missed twice in the first half while Kieran Tierney shot over on his 100th appearance for the London club.

After the break it was Bukayo Saka’s turn, who was thwarted by Benitez when he attempted a low try while Eddie Nketiah narrowly missed a fierce shot.

However, Benitez was beaten with 20 minutes to go when Takehiro Tomiyasu pocketed a cross from the right and Xhaka fired home, unusual for him with his right foot.

The Gunners have maintained their scoring record in all 14 games they have played so far this season.

PSV’s best opportunity came when Xavi Simons’ low drive was saved by Matt Turner in the Arsenal goal and Benitez saved from Saka and Gabriel Martinelli.

For Arteta’s Premier League leaders, the job was done and the Arsenal train rolls on. Next, take a trip to Southampton on Sunday.
