Ian Wright believes Raheem Sterling will be unlucky in Chelsea’s current tactical line-up under Graham Potter.

The England international has struggled to assert himself in recent weeks, scoring just once in his last nine games for Chelsea.

Potter has been forced to dismiss suggestions that Sterling is acting as a full-back in his tactical system and insists Chelsea’s £50m summer signing is not overloaded with defensive responsibilities.

But Wright believes Potter isn’t getting the best out of Sterling, claiming opposing teams are exploiting Chelsea’s defensive weaknesses widely.

“It’s one of the confusing things Graham Potter is doing at the moment, I can’t understand it,” Wright said on The Kelly and Wrighty Show ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League clash with Arsenal.

“When I did the game analysis [Chelsea’s defeat to Brighton]the full-back, Brighton just tore them to pieces because you have Pulisic and Sterling who are said to be coming and trying to help Chalobah and Cucurella.

“It didn’t happen and I couldn’t understand it.

“No way [Sterling] can be lucky to play that role, especially when you look at what he did at City and the team he played in, everything was really offensively focused for him.

“It must be really strange and tough for him to go to a new club and play in a position like that. I hope they can sort this out for him soon.’

Wright also believes Chelsea’s narrow wins have been “taped across the cracks” since Potter replaced Thomas Tuchel.

“The problem is that they played it so disorganized,” Wright said.

“I know they lost one in ten, but the way they played the other day it’s not a good form.

‘If he doesn’t do it more solidly [in midfield] and get something going there, whether it’s Kovacic or Jorginho, Chelsea got away with playing with proper full-backs on the pitch, I think it’ll happen again [a heavy defeat]I think it could be about cracks, the games up to that point because if he’s that far from getting the full-backs, Thiago Silva is being dragged into areas, Chalobah is being dragged, they can’t go on like that because you will beaten, they get beaten pretty hard.

“It’s a concern, they have to sort it out pretty quickly or it won’t be good for them.

“They had a couple of results where it could have gone the other way and that’s what happens sometimes. That’s why you need managers who come out, like Ten Hag, who says what’s wrong even if you win, and I think that’s something Graham Potter needs to do.

“It also felt a bit weird, Graham Potter going back there, the Brighton players would have an extra 25 per cent and the way they closed them in the first half gave them the impetus. With no full-back coming back to help I can’t understand why him [Potter] did this.’
