Brentford striker Ivan Toney is under investigation by the Football Association over allegations he played on football during his career.

The 26-year-old, who is hoping to be part of England’s World Cup squad this month, is the focus of an investigation that has been going on for several months.

Toney, who has scored eight Premier League goals for Brentford this season, was in England’s last squad during September’s international break but did not feature for Gareth Southgate’s side.

According to MailOnline, Toney is said to have played when he played in the lower leagues and before joining Brentford in 2020.

There is no evidence of Toney’s criminal activity or that he attempted to rig the outcome of any game.

But FA rules prevent all professional players from betting on football during their careers.

On Saturday, Toney released a statement, which read: “I am aware of a story about myself in a national newspaper today.

“I have assisted the Football Association in its investigation and will not comment until this investigation is complete.

“I’m a proud Englishman and it was always my childhood dream to play for my country at a World Cup.”

Meanwhile, a source told The Sun: “Ivan is aware of the investigation. He’s worried but insists he didn’t do anything wrong.

“The FA has a duty to respond fully to allegations it receives. But it’s obviously a highly sensitive matter for the FA given he’s a potential contender for England’s World Cup squad.
